Our ethos for mental capacity assessments

Our ethos for mental capacity assessments

Assessing capacity consists of more than asking a client to, count backwards from 20, say their name, and who the Prime Minister is. We take pride in our work.
Within our practice the key principle we adhere to is that the person we are assessing will be supported to participate in the assessment as much as possible and that outcomes are in the person’s best interest. We work with other professionals, family and concerned others as an inclusive service to ensure the client is at the centre of the process with their wishes, feelings and values being fully accounted for.

As outlined by the NHS, The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is designed to protect people who can’t make decisions for themselves or lack the mental capacity to do so. This could be due to a mental health condition, a severe learning difficulty, a brain injury, a stroke or unconsciousness due to an anaesthetic or sudden accident. We adhere to the Key Principles of the Mental Capacity Act
